The inn was originally built in 1853 by John Prime Treadwell as his private residence, which housed three generations of Treadwells until 1915. The home was then owned by George T. Sperry until 1928, when it was established as The Homestead Inn by Mary K. Philpot and became the leading hotel in the area. In 1938, a second building was added, and it housed a restaurant for many years. In 1955, the restaurant was closed and converted into hotel rooms. From 1977-1985, the property was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Donald MacPherson. Since that time, Rolf and Peggy Hammer have owned the property. The inn is located at the north end of the Village Green, near shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. The Litchfield Hills provide many activities, including hiking, golfing, and downhill and cross-country skiing. Guests may also enjoy the area’s recreational lakes and parks, the summer theater, concerts, museums, Early American homes, historical sites, and antique, craft, and specialty shops. Small private parties are welcomed. Household pet. Travel agency receives commission from inn.
