This large Victorian detached house surrounded by a low wall is easily identified by the splendid display of hanging baskets and climbers, which add a dash of color to the grey brick (in summer at least). Since buying the property in 1996, Sheelagh and David Southwell have redecorated throughout and furnished it with antiques in keeping with a fine Victorian house. The eight bedrooms are all en suite, clean and comfortably furnished; the three ground-floor double rooms are suitable for wheelchair-users. Smoking is “very restricted” in the house, and may soon be disallowed altogether. The dining room is in an extension to the main building and there is a licensed bar. Dinner is available if booked by 2:00 P.M. on the day, and guests may choose one, two, or three courses: perhaps home-made soup with crusty bread followed by locally caught haddock in breadcrumbs and finishing with Eve’s pudding and custard. Nairn is a golfer’s paradise, with two championship golf courses, plus others within striking distance. The battlefield of Culloden is nearby, as well as castles at Cawdor and Brodie.
