Set in a peaceful hamlet in the Weald of Kent, with views over open countryside, this large eighteenth-century barn conversion makes a relaxing retreat. The “very hospitable” owners, John and Penny Gillespie, offer a warm welcome, four comfortable, spacious and well-equipped bedrooms, and “excellent” breakfasts and evening meals, which on fine summer evenings may be served in the garden. Much attention is paid to sourcing of food supplies: fish from Hythe, a neighbor supplies free-range eggs, nearly all fruit and vegetables are home-grown, and meat comes from a local butcher who rears the animals himself. A typical dinner menu might be asparagus with hollandaise, followed by halibut with black butter, then lemon mousse to finish. Vegetarian options can be provided with notice. Bring your own wine.
Directions: Take A28 Ashford to Tenterden road to Bethersden, turn into village, then take Wissenden Lane (next to village school); take left fork after 1½m. The house is fifth on the right, opposite oasthouse.
