“A truly outstanding B&B, one of the most memorable I’ve ever stayed in,” enthused one visitor to Duncton Mill, a listed country house standing in magnificent grounds in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A flour mill on this site was built in 1203, and the present handsome white-painted building dates from 1840. Inside, the elegant bedrooms have antique mahogany furniture, Rococo lamps, silk curtains, and en suite bathrooms with antique brass fittings. One room has a huge brass bed. Guests will enjoy the peaceful lounge. Breakfast is served in the dining room overlooking the mill pond. A traditional or light breakfast is available, and vegetarian and special diets can be catered to. The impressive gardens consist of rare and unusual trees and spring-fed trout lakes, and the house is surrounded by thirty acres of woods and old orchards. Trout-fishing equipment and tuition are available for guests wishing to try their luck in one of the three lakes. An outdoor heated swimming pool is available in season for those staying more than a single night. Owners Sheila and Tom Bishop offer warm and friendly hospitality in their charming home and are happy to assist with itineraries and recommend venues for evening meals. Petworth House and Goodwood House are close by, and the walking hereabouts is very good.
