Looking like a folly, Bradford Old Windmill’s name gives the game away: it is a charming conversion of the bottom of a circular windmill tower. Pointed Gothic windows, conical roofs, and an oak gallery running around the exterior of the building all give it a distinctive, slightly eccentric appearance. Inside, a log fire burns in the circular sitting room, originally the grain store, and two of the bedrooms are circular too. One, under a conical roof, has a water bed and a whirlpool bath, with views of weavers’ cottages on the opposite hill, while the other, featuring a round king-sized bed, is a large room looking over the town towards Salisbury Plain. The other has a Gothic iron bed and a separate sitting room. Traditional breakfasts are served in the dining room at a refectory table, or perhaps on the terrace overlooking town and countryside, while dinner, available on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, is vegetarian, picking up an ethnic theme, perhaps from Mexico or Nepal. Bookings at weekends and bank holidays must be for a minimum of two nights. The B&B is located off A363, 3m NW of Trowbridge, at the end of a private, unsignposted drive. Phone for directions.
