Little River Bluffs offers three luxurious, spacious cabins with complete kitchens and all necessities in a 50-acre private preserve on the cool, artesian-fed Little Tchefuncte River in St. Tammany Parish, or “Northshore New Orleans.” Cabins are the River Chalet, the Meadow Cabin, and the Treehouse. Fireplaces, screened porches, outside hammocks, kayaks, inner tubes, bass-perch pond, and nature trails. Enjoy good resident and migrant birding.

Co-owner David Campbell first came to this site in 1970, pitched a tent for weekend camping, and began the development of Little River Bluffs (LRB). A graduate of Tulane Law School and former Marshall Scholar at Oxford University where he obtained a doctorate in legal philosophy, David practiced law in New Orleans until 1995. He founded the Little Tchefuncte River Association and serves on environmental, preservation, and civic boards. He is a member of the Folsom and the Louisiana Native Plant Societies. Since 1992, LRB partner Charles Apffel, with degrees in architecture from Washington University and a master’s from Texas A & M, oversees design and development of this unique, nature retreat facility.

To assist in the identification of area wildlife, guests are provided with trail maps, nature books, lists of trees, plants and wildflowers currently in bloom and birds and mammals that reside in or visit the grounds.

Once guests find their way to Little River Bluffs, the first thing they might notice is outdoor sculpture scattered about, and the next, marvelous woods and meadows complete with a stocked fishpond. When guests reach their accommodations and walk out on the deck, they can see the clear white sand banks and the river curving past, its cool water running briskly.

Guests have the run of the fifty acres where they may fish in the pond; walk the river banks and the butterfly path; traverse three Monet-style bridges; swim, kayak, or float the river; bird watch; discover native plants and flowers; or just lie in a hammock and daydream. More than a hundred different wild flowers have been recorded on the preserve, including wild camellia and azalea, Carolina lily, yellow star grass, trumpet creeper, pitcher plant, and golden torch. Deer, turkey, beaver, otter, opossum, raccoon, and armadillo are some of the mammals seen on the property. There are many birds, including barred, great horned, and screech owls; pileated, downy, and red-headed woodpeckers; great and little blue herons; hawks; kingfishers; quail; and hummingbirds. This is truly a retreat in nature.
