This B&B is different. Imagine staying overnight in a 1930s caboose or a 1904 depot. The caboose features a rear deck. In addition to the original commode, lavatory, and daybed that converts into two singles, it also has wicker furniture, Battenburg lace curtains, and a claw foot bathtub. The octagon-shaped depot, which also served as a butcher shop, fruit stand, shoe shop, and barber shop, has beaded walls, double beds, and is handicap-accessible. The B&B also offers accommodations in a 1920s ticket office and a mail/passenger train car from the 1800s.
The breakfast-sitting room overlooks the goldfish pond, flowering herb garden, grapevines, and a Cajun cabin where innkeeper Margaret Brinkhaus makes and displays her jellies, jams, and flavored vinegars. This part of her business is known as La Caboose Specialties, and offerings include rose petal, muscadine, and mayhaw jellies; fig preserves; amaretto/pear and plum/rum/raisin conserves; blueberry, raspberry, garlic, basil, and lemon/ mint vinegars; and crawfish, garlic, and pepper jellies. Margaret still picks most of the ingredients for her jams and jellies herself. Her yard is a veritable garden of berries, fruits, and vegetables, making it possible for her to use fresh produce for everything she makes. She ships all of these goodies and will be happy to provide you with a brochure for ordering. LBBA member, inspected 1997. Pays commission to travel agents.
